About the Flooring Calculator
Flooring is sold by the carton, not the loose square foot. Running short by even half a box means waiting days for freight delivery, with the risk that a new production batch may have slight dye or grain variations.
Straight plank layouts require a 7% to 10% allowance for end-cuts against perimeter baseboards. Diagonal and herringbone patterns generate significantly more corner trimmings and demand 12% to 15% buffer.
Underlying Formula
Room Area + Pattern Waste Margin ÷ Pack Size
Total Needed = Room Area × (1 + Waste Factor) | Boxes = Ceiling(Total ÷ Box Size)

Frequently Asked Questions
Common queries answered by our architectural editors and renovation consultants.
Why must flooring always be rounded up to the nearest whole box?
Manufacturers and retailers only sell sealed cartons to preserve board tongues, grooves, and moisture content.
Should I keep leftover flooring planks after completion?
Yes! We strongly advise keeping 1–2 unopened cartons in conditioned storage for future plumbing repairs, radiator moves, or board replacements.
Do I need to subtract kitchen islands from flooring area?
Yes for floating floors (flooring should not be trapped under heavy cabinetry). For glued-down solid parquet, floors are usually installed wall-to-wall first.
